By CHIDI NKWOPARA
OWERRI— Director General, National Youth Service Corps, NYSC, Brigadier-General Nnamdi Okore-Afia, yesterday appealed to Imo State government to assist in upgrading facilities in the establishment’s secretariat in Owerri.

The DG, who made the appeal, while commissioning the ultra-modern office block built by the NYSC in Owerri, also pleaded with Governor Rochas Okorocha to furnish the new building.

“During my first visit to the secretariat, I described the office as first century shrines. I am however happy that the new building has changed my impression”, Okore-Afia said.

Earlier in her welcome address, the State NYSC Coordinator, Mrs. Chinwe Ojukwu, described the event as “an important milestone in the annals of the NYSC scheme in Imo State”.

She recalled that the establishment’s staff had to work in un-conducive environment, stressing that “this was due to the dilapidated nature of the offices and rickety furniture.

Mrs. Ojukwu identified the establishment of distress call centre, the new corps posting policy, introduction of skills acquisition training for corps members and the implementation of new administrative structure to enhance career prospects in NYSC as some of the achievements of the DG.

She pleaded that her office be empowered to renovate the remaining office blocks, as well as provide modest furnishing for them.
