Nigeria women boxers are in China seeking for qualification tickets for the the London 2012 Olympics.

They include Kehinde Obareh, Olademeji Oluwatoyin and Edith Odoke. They will join other Olympic hopefuls to slug it out for a place at the AIBA World Championship taking place in Quinhuangdao, China.

The competition, which started yesterday will end on May 20, it is the only qualification competition for the Olympics.

Women boxing is making its Olympic debut at the London 2012 Olympics and Nigerian officials are hoping that the girls will make an impact at the championship.

“It is the first time our women will be going out. We only hope that they pick qualification for the Olympics and from there let’s see what will happen,” said Mr. Patrick Uwagbale Nigerian Boxing Federation secretary-general.

The AIBA Women’s World Boxing Championships is one of the fastest growing competitions in international boxing. Women’s boxing has taken the World by storm ever since the first AIBA Women’s World Boxing Championships in 2001 in Scranton, United States of America.

Women Boxers aged 17 to 34 compete in 10 weight categories: 45-48 kg, 51 kg, 54 kg, 57 kg, 60 kg, 64 kg, 69 kg, 75 kg, 81 kg and 81+ kg. 24 quotas places (eight in each weight categories)  are up for grabs.
