OSOGBO—THE College of Health Sciences of the Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife, OAU, has produced 3,350 medical personnel comprising 2,900 medical doctors and 450 dental surgeons in the last 40 years.

At a briefing to mark the 40th year’s anniversary of the college in Ile- Ife yesterday, the Provost of the college, Prof Solomon Ogunniyi, said during the period, the college had equally recorded some landmark achievements in the medical field.

Some of these medical feats, according to him, included the first university to successfully carry out separation of Siamese twins, kidney transplant among others.

According to him, “we have performed surgical feat, successful separation of conjoined twins, wholly indigenous kidney transplant surgery and cochlear transplant.”

He said the college in his efforts to improve on teaching, research and service delivery had increased significantly staff strength, while academic programmes had also been sustained and improved upon for better output.

He noted that “many people lost interest in our health institutions in the country because many of them are not adequately funded, and not adequately equipped to handle some of the medical cases they travels abroad for treatment.

If our hospitals are adequately funded, if they are adequately equipped, there will be no need to travel abroad to seek for any medical treatment this is because we have personnel in this country who could handle some of these cases.”
