GOVERNOR Adams Oshiomhole of Edo State has assured workers in the state that everything possible will be done to deliver on their welfare even as the revenue accruing to the state from the federation account has been reduced by N300 million.
The governor who spoke during the workers day celebration at the Samuel Ogbemudia Stadium in Benin City, said the government would not relent to meet the challenges of the state, saying “every door they lock, we will open another. We are working hard on how we can explore new avenues to beef up the revenue to meet our challenges.”
According to him, the federal government has reduced the monthly allocation to the state with N300, million which is N3.6 billion annually.
“Edo is earning less from the federation account and we have reduced the personal income tax. The net loss is N600 million monthly and N7.2 billion per year. We have increased subvention to Ambrose Ali University and other institutions and the local government has been directed to resume the payment to teachers,” the governor announced.
The governor who lambasted the People’s Democratic Party for the collapse of infrastructures in the state, said in the next two weeks the Edo Line transport service would be reopened.
According to Oshiomhole, “the PDP underdeveloped the state and put development on the reverse. The Bendel Breweries was run down by PDP. They mismanaged it and we accepted to pay the bad debt they left behind. Now we are servicing the debt, capitalizing Bendel Breweries and bringing it back to production. The PDP privatized Okpilla cement factory which was producing very well and it was grounded also. The Juice factory at Ehor, Cassava factory at Uromi and fertilizer factory at Auchi were all grounded by the PDP.”
The Chairman, Nigeria Labour Congress Congress NLC Comrade Emma Ademukun and the Chairman of Trade Union Congress of Nigeria TUC Edo State council, Comrade Joe Aligbe both in their address at the May Day celebration which was jointly organized by NLC and TUC, reaffirmed their commitment to vote for Comrade Adams Oshiomhole in the forth coming gubernatorial elections in the state.
“We have resolved and are completely committed to our struggle of having Comrade Adams Oshiomhole returned as governor elect on the14th of July 2012 and we will deliver as part of the steps towards achieving our comrades return, we are using this opportunity to urge all workers in Edo State to immediately embark on a door to door and neighbor to neighbor campaign to eligible voters in the state in order to shore up votes for our comrade governor to a minimum of 90 percent of the total votes cast in every electoral ward in the state”.
