Nigeria’s Sunshine Stars, who are trapped in a gun fight in Mali, have spoken of a “scary” situation as they remain holed up in the hotel.

The second batch of Sunshine Stars, who were to have left Bamako Tuesday morning, are still holed up in their hotel with the costs shouldered by the host FA.

Sunshine striker Ukeyima Akombo told MTNFootball.com on phone from Hotel Columbus in Bamako, where the team are holed up, that they were scared by the sound of heavy machine gun fire on Tuesday.

“It has not been a funny situation. It has been scary with heavy sound of guns, but today (Wednesday) is better because the sound of the shooting is a bit far,” said the giant striker

“I have never been in a situation like this  before. We are just staying at one place. We watch films until we get tired to sleep and gist at times. Our hotel is not been specially guarded, but the soldiers are always on the streets, where the hotel is.

“We are tired of the whole situation and want to get out of here as soon as possible.”

However, the Nigerian team are still unclear of when they will finally depart Mali now.

“It’s just early morning here and the situation is still the same,” accompanying journalist Tunde Shamsudeen added Wednesday.

“We still heard gun shots but a bit far from us, unlike previously. We are still indoors in our hotel and we are being taking care of by the Mali FA.

“We are monitoring the events and as soon as the airport is open, we will depart for Nigeria, but we are still waiting for the signal from our hosts to give us some good news.”

Sunshine played out a 1-1 draw with home team Djoliba in a CAF Champions League Round of 16 clash at the weekend.

A first batch of players and officials left for Nigeria Monday afternoon without any incident only for the second and final batch to be trapped by the shootout between the military Junta and armed rivals fighting for the control of the country.
