NECA faults FG’s increasing investment in power

By Victor AHIUMA-YOUNG
NIGERIA Employers Consultative Association, NECA, has faulted government continuous investment in Power sector while on the other hand telling the whole that it is privatizing Power Holding Company of Nigeria.

This came as organized labour in the nation’s Electricity sector, has blamed the Minister of Power, Professor Barth Nnaji for the recurring crisis in the Power sector.

Speaking to Sweet Crude against the government continuous investment in the Power sector while as the same trumpeting about planned privatization of Power Holding Company of Nigeria, PHCN, Director General of NECA, Dr. Segun Osinowo said “I thought they were selling those power plants as and when they are and will not require further investments. So, except government has other reasons why they want to do that.

But for me if I want to sale an old car, why will I bother myself on panel beating the car or fine-tuning servicing the engine? How am I sure I am going to get the exact cost from the person that wants to buy it? I will just put it in the market and get the money I can get and just move away.

I do not fully understand government’s reason for that. They might have their reasons, maybe because they have not made the details available, that is why we are asking this questions. But from a principled and rather a simplistic perspective, you are selling off and privatizing, there is simply no basis for you p
utting money back into the business.”

Meanwhile, organised labour in the nation’s Electricity sector, has blamed the Minister of Power, Professor Barth Nnaji for the recurring crisis in the Power sector.

Speaking on the retirement of three top executive of PHCN, National Union of Electricity, NUEE, through its General Secretary, Comrade Joe Ajaero said “As far as the employees of PHCN and the members of NUEE are concerned and of course, the discerning minds of the public who are critical stakeholders of the Nigerian Project, the allusion is a mere rhetoric to mislead Nigerians. In the midst of this confusion we make bold to state as follows:-

That the sacking of the Officers is borne out of sheer misunderstanding that some of them are workers’ friendly and offer advices that can further improve the working condition of the staff and industrial peace. That most of the staff affected have absolutely nothing to do with Power Generation, Transmission and Distribution.
