ABUJA—THE Senate has expressed worries over the ineffectiveness of the various poverty reduction intervention programmes of the Federal Government, just as it fears that poverty could trigger revolution in the country if not checked.

The worries expressed during the consideration of a motion brought by Senator Olubunmi Adetumbi made the Senate to direct its Committee on Poverty Alleviation and National Planning to investigate the various government interventions agencies.

Senator Adetunmbi, while moving the motion, observed that Nigeria ranked the lowest in terms of human development category with Angola slightly ahead of the country in GDP/capita, adult illiteracy, primary school enrolment and health adjusted life expectancy.

He said: “The impressive annual real GPD growth rate averaged 9.2 per cent, between 2009 and 2010. Correspondingly over the same period, absolute poverty incidence has remained high, rising from 42.7per cent in 1992 to 65.6per cent in 1996.”
