Afro hip-hop artist Chy No to drop new EP

…shares inspiring journey from Anambra to Lagos

Hillary Chinonso Uguru, popularly known as Chy No, is carving a unique path in the music industry with his soulful blend of Afrobeat, R&B, and reggae.

The Anambra-born, Lagos-raised artist, whose stage name is derived from his middle name “Chinonso,” is gearing up to release a new EP that promises to push creative boundaries while staying true to his roots.

Chy No’s musical journey began in his early years, influenced by his mother, who led their church choir. “Between ages five to seven, I knew music meant something to me,” he recalls. By 17, he had recorded his first demo, and in 2012, he made his stage debut at a show in Surulere, Lagos. “I was excited but also nervous,” he says with a laugh. “That nervous feeling still creeps in sometimes, but now I turn it into energy.”

Starting his career in a trio called XKH, Chy No later went solo, drawing inspiration from global icons like 2Pac, Usher, and Nigerian greats 2Baba, Wizkid, and Burna Boy. His distinct sound—a fusion he describes as “Afropop with a twist”—has earned him a growing fanbase. Unlike many artists chasing trends, Chy No is focused on building a lasting legacy. “I want to release timeless music, mentor young African creatives, and grow as both an artist and sound engineer,” he says.

His upcoming EP will feature collaborations, including a high-energy track with a Dutch producer and a potential feature with a Nigerian artist who inspired his early days. “We’re also working on cinematic visuals—not just music videos, but short films that tell my story,” he shares.

Chy No’s music reflects his life experiences, from the hustle of Lagos to the multicultural vibe of Amsterdam. “Every challenge—pain, hope, ambition—ends up in my music. It’s therapy, not just for me, but for anyone who listens,” he explains. In an industry often dominated by fleeting trends, his commitment to authenticity stands out. “I stopped trying to fit in and started creating what feels true,” he declares.

With his new project on the horizon and a clear vision for the future, Chy No is poised to make an even bigger impact on the global music scene.
