Students of the University of Abuja have condemned the call for the removal of the Vice-Chancellor of the university, Professor James Adelabu, by the Academic Staff Union of Universities of the institution and its  purported vote of no confidence on the VC.

The students  described the call by a faction of ASUU, led by Mr. Clement Chup, as self-serving and not in the interest of the students.

Speaking at a news conference in Abuja recently, the Director of National Affairs, UniAbuja chapter of the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS), Mr. Aaron Aliyu, claimed the university has seen commendable changes since Adelabu assumed leadership of the institution.

Aliyu said the V-C inherited monumental problems from his predecessor, Prof. Nuhu Yaqub and was only struggling to overcome them, stressing that he should be allowed to continue with his reform prgrammes.

He said: “Permit me to say that University of Abuja has received massive changes under the leadership of Prof. J. Adelabu.  His kind of administration has shown a big difference between leadership and politics.

“We condemn the recent calling for the removal of the vice-Chancellor by the academic staff union of the university, that their calling arisen from the recent incidents, as baseless and has no facts but for selfish reasons.

“That we the students of University of Abuja support the administration of Prof. J. Adelabu as the Vice-chancellor and his management and compliment his transformation agenda for the provision of the good academic environment for the students of the university,” he added.

Aliyu, who led other group of students at the media briefing called on the Federal Government to provide the facilities necessary for the upgrading and proper accreditation of the faculties of medicine, veterinary medicine and engineering.
