Delta govt launches environmental sustainability award

Delta State Ministry of Environment, in partnership with Kegala Environmental Consultancy Limited, has launched the Enviromental Sustainability award in Asaba.
The award was created as an initiative aimed at fostering the culture of environmental stewardship and sustainability, a key mandate of Governor Sheriff Oborevwori.

In a statement by the Commissioner for Environment, Mr Ejiro Jamani, said the award will recognise the Cleanest Local Government Headquarters in the State, the Cleanest town or communities; the most environmentally friendly banks; most environmentally friendly hospitality organization; environmental Champions or green enthusiasts; the most outstanding schools based on environmental cleanliness (Primary, Secondary and Tertiary). Others include the cleanest Market place in the State; the most Environmentally friendly Ministries, Departments and Agencies (MDAs); the most environmental friendly Oil and Gas company; and the most Environmentally friendly Hospitals and Diagnostic Centers among others.
The Commissioner said: “It is my pleasure to flag off the Delta State Environmental Sustainability Awards” (DSESA).
Environmental sustainability is not just a buzzword; it is a responsibility that we all share. Our planet is facing unprecedented challenges from the devastating impacts of climate change to the diverse forms of pollution that threaten our ecosystems, health, and the well-being of future generations.
A committee of academics, professionals/environmentalists, media, civil society members, and non-governmental organizations has been formed to assess, evaluate, and verify the activities of individuals, organizations, and institutions nominated for sustainability awards. Everybody is given the opportunity to point out Delta State Environmental Sustainability Champions.”
Mr. Ejiro, who stated that the nomination process will be open from 20th June 20-31, 2025, encouraged the people to submit thier nomination entries through dedicated lines, Web portals and social media handles that were to be communicated soon.
On his part, Managing Director of the Kegala Environmental Consultancy, Deacon Okezi Odugala urged private and public institutions across the State to cue into environmental sustainability and sustainable development practices inorder to enhance their chances of being selected.
He also challenged oil companies across the state to use this initiative to demonstrate their commitment to environmentally friendly practices in order to compete for the opportunity to be nominated.
