With a career that spans over two decades at the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC), Owulade has emerged as a transformative figure in the field of instrumentation, control systems, and project delivery across West Africa’s oil and gas ecosystem.

Described by colleagues as “the architect of Nigeria’s control systems revolution,” Owulade currently serves as Lead Instrument Engineer and Senior Control Systems Engineer at NETCO, the engineering subsidiary of NNPC. From leading national refinery upgrades to pioneering smart grid publications, his portfolio is as diverse as it is impactful.

Since joining NNPC in 2005, Owulade has worked on more than 40 high-impact projects across Nigeria’s petroleum landscape—including strategic pipeline replacements, fire and gas system designs, and control systems for subsea instrumentation. His leadership in delivering the FEED and EPC cost estimates for 11 NNPC depots and 7 pump stations has been hailed as a national model for timely and efficient engineering execution.

“My mission is to elevate Nigerian engineering to global standards—through excellence, safety, and innovation,” Owulade told Vanguard in an exclusive interview.

One of his most distinguished accomplishments came in 2017, when he served as the Lead Instrumentation and Telecoms Engineer in the development of the first-ever NNPC Engineering General Specifications (EGS). The EGS initiative, aligned with Shell DEP standards, introduced unified instrumentation benchmarks that elevated project delivery standards across Nigeria’s downstream sector.

Beyond project execution, Owulade has become a respected international scholar in the fields of AI-driven energy systems, smart city infrastructure, and carbon footprint reduction technologies. Between 2022 and 2023 alone, he co-authored over 9 peer-reviewed journal articles, many of which are cited in the International Journal of Multidisciplinary Research and Growth Evaluation and IRE Journals—outlets with international readership and rigorous peer-review protocols.

His scholarly output positions him as one of the few African engineers shaping global conversations on industrial AI, emissions transparency, and smart infrastructure.

His certifications from Microsoft, Cisco, and industry-focused instrumentation software systems also enable him to bridge legacy oilfield operations with next-generation digital control systems—a rare blend of traditional discipline and futuristic skill.

What sets Owulade apart is not just his past achievements but his future relevance. As the global energy sector pivots toward low-carbon systems, digitized infrastructure, and AI-enhanced monitoring, Owulade’s work aligns with top-tier priorities across the United States Department of Energy (DOE), the International Energy Agency (IEA), and the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
