As part of the Eid-Kabir celebration, Hon. Ibrahim Layode, the Lagos State Commissioner for Home Affairs, on Saturday distributed gifts to children in Badagry.

According to the commissioner, the gesture was aimed at bringing joy to young members of the community and emphasising the importance of inclusion during festive periods.

The distribution took place at the Agia Tree Cenotaph, located beside the Badagry Central Mosque, where children gathered to receive the items.

Speaking shortly after the distribution, Layode, who was represented by Mr. Selan Pot-Balogun, Chairman of the OIL Educational Initiative, said the effort was designed to directly impact lives, especially in the area of education.

“The outreach to children remains a key part of the festival’s activities, reflecting the values of care, sharing, and community support,” he said.

Layode said the gift packs included basic supplies and treats.

The commissioner, however, used the occasion to warn children against drug abuse and cultism.

He urged them to remain focused and disciplined, and warned them against distractions.

The commissioner appealed to them to embrace hard work and dream big in their careers.

Layode reiterated the importance of protecting children’s rights and ensuring their safety from abuse, urging parents to prioritise their children’s education.

The items in the gift packs included school bags, exercise books, water bottles, and food flasks.

Also part of the events lined up for the celebration of Eid-Kabir was a colourful display of culture, music, and spirituality, as the 25th edition of the Badagry Ileya Festival held in front of the Badagry Central Mosque.

The event featured captivating performances by renowned Islamic artistes Saoti Arewa and Monsurat Ajelero, who thrilled the audience with their soulful renditions, creating an atmosphere of spiritual upliftment and communal joy.

The event, sponsored by the commissioner, brought together Muslim faithful, traditional leaders, and residents from across Badagry and beyond.

At the event, Layode was represented by his wife, who said this year’s celebration was much bigger and better. She appreciated the overwhelming turnout and participation of the people.

The Chief Imam of Badagry Division, Alhaji Uwais Akewushola, commended the organisers for their consistency.

He lauded the commissioner for using the platform to foster unity, religious harmony, and cultural pride.

The Chief Imam noted that the festival continues to grow each year, bringing development and vibrancy to the community.
