The Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) has declared that its E-Health initiative will significantly transform healthcare delivery across hospitals in the country.
Speaking during the commissioning of an electronic healthcare facility at the State Specialist Hospital in Akure, Ondo State, NCC’s Executive Vice Chairman/CEO, Dr. Aminu Maida, said the project represents a major stride toward integrating technology into healthcare. He was represented by the Commission’s Project Director, Mr. Philip Eretan.
According to Maida, the initiative is part of the Commission’s broader efforts to harness the power of Information and Communication Technology (ICT) to improve and modernize the healthcare system, making it more accessible, efficient, and responsive.
“The completion of this e-Health project is a testament to the NCC’s commitment to driving innovation, research, and growth in our nation’s digital economy,” he stated.
He noted that the project has a two-pronged benefit: firstly, integrating the healthcare sector into the digital economy to enjoy the same advantages as other sectors, and secondly, enabling healthier citizens to better contribute to the economy through improved healthcare access.
“By integrating advanced ICT solutions into healthcare, we enhance the quality of medical services and ensure access for all, regardless of location,” he added.
Maida further explained that the project aims to streamline medical processes, improve patient care, and facilitate efficient health records management.
He attributed the success of the project to effective collaboration among stakeholders, emphasizing that the model can be replicated and scaled nationwide.
“Your dedication and support have been instrumental in bringing this vision to life,” he said. “It is through such collaborative efforts that we can continue to drive innovation and progress in Nigeria.”
In his remarks, the Acting Chief Medical Director of the hospital, Dr. Adesina Akintan—represented by the Director of Research and Training, Dr. Ndidi Okunnuga—described the project as unprecedented.
Okunnuga said the initiative would significantly improve healthcare delivery through proper data analysis and better communication among health professionals.
She also appealed to the NCC to provide adequate training for the hospital’s staff to ensure the project’s success and sustainability.
“With improved data sharing and communication between facilities, medical professionals can provide more accurate and timely care,” she said. “This project will enhance coordination, track patient progress, and ultimately improve the speed and quality of healthcare services.”
