Funke Akindele, celebrated actress and filmmaker, in a conversation with Chude has emphatically made it clear that her journey in the murky world of politics is far from over.
“I am learning—about my State, about my country. So that when I speak again in the future, I can back it up with statistics, with clarity and determination” she said. She added, “Ask me if I will go back into politics again—my answer is yes, I will.”
In 2022, Akindele made headlines when she was announced as the deputy governorship candidate for the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) in Lagos State, running alongside Abdul-Azeez Olajide Adediran, popularly known as “Jandor” . This move was both surprising and inspiring, showcasing her willingness to step beyond her comfort zone to effect change.
Acknowledging the demands of her new political role, Akindele made the bold decision to suspend her flourishing acting career. She emphasized that this sacrifice was necessary to focus entirely on the mission to “rescue” Lagos State, particularly aiming to uplift the youth, women, and the girl child .
Despite a spirited campaign, the PDP ticket did not secure victory in the 2023 Lagos State gubernatorial elections, losing to the incumbent, Babajide Sanwo-Olu of the All Progressives Congress (APC). Following the defeat, Akindele removed politically related posts from her social media platforms and refrained from public political commentary for a period .
Akindele’s commitment to societal betterment extends beyond electoral politics. In December 2024, she was appointed as the National Goodwill Ambassador for Nigeria by the Joint United Nations Programme on HIV and AIDS (UNAIDS). In this role, she focuses on promoting HIV prevention and awareness across the country .
Funke Akindele’s journey from a celebrated actress to a dedicated political figure underscores the potential for individuals to leverage their platforms for public good. Her resilience and unwavering commitment to societal development serve as an inspiration, illustrating that with passion and determination, one can effect meaningful change beyond their primary profession.
