Improving workers’ conditions, our greatest achievement as Labour leaders – Adeyanju

By Victor Ahiuma-Young

Improving the conditions of workers is the central goal of organised labour.

Thus the success or failure of Labour leaders are in most cases judged by this among others.

Therefore it was not surprising that the immediate past President-General of Maritime Workers Union of Nigeria, MWUN, Prince Adewale Adeyanju in an appraisal of the leadership of MWUN under his headship, said their greatest achievements were improving the conditions of workers and ensuring industrial peace.

Highlighting their achievements at the 7th Quadrennial National Delegates’ Conference of the Union, Adewale recalled the challenges the leadership faced on assumption of office.

At the time, the task ahead appeared overwhelming, yet his determination to improve the lives of maritime workers fuelled his resolve.

One of the most notable achievements of his leadership, Adewale informed, was the establishment of minimum standards for conditions of service via the National Joint Industrial Council (NJIC).

For the first time in Nigeria’s history, the MWUN set a benchmark minimum wage of N200,000 for shipping workers, significantly improving the quality of life for thousands of members.

Furthermore, the Union introduced unparalleled welfare packages for seafarers and achieved substantial salary increases for Nigerian Ports Authority (NPA) workers after nearly two decades of stagnation.

The President-General also proudly outlined the Union’s expansion under his leadership.

New districts and units were created for various categories of workers, including dockworkers, seafarers, and shipping agencies. This expansion not only grew the Union’s membership but also created new employment opportunities for young Nigerians, particularly in emerging sectors like the Lekki Deep Sea Port and Dangote Port. Such growth, Adewale stressed, was crucial for securing the future of maritime workers in an evolving industry.

Adewale further highlighted the Union’s commitment to workers’ welfare.

The stability and international recognition of the Union were central themes in Adewale’s address.

His election as the Global Vice-President of the International Transport Workers’ Federation, ITF, and his position on the ITF Executive Board, were pivotal moments that raised the profile of MWUN on the global stage.

Adewale stressed that these achievements were not only personal victories but a testament to the strength and unity of the Union.

The President-General also reflected on the numerous collective bargaining agreements (CBAs) signed during his tenure, each contributing to better working conditions and improved workers’ rights.

He emphasized that these agreements were key to fostering industrial peace, providing a platform for constructive dialogue and conflict resolution.

His efforts to improve workers’ conditions, foster industrial peace, and advocate for the rights and welfare of maritime workers have set a remarkable precedent. The Union’s continued progress will undoubtedly be inspired by the achievements made during his tenure
