UMUAHIA – Oil magnate and Chairman, Board of Trustees of the Petroleum Retailers Outlet Owners Association of Nigeria, Chief Obasi Lawson, who was kidnapped on March 4, 2025, has regained his freedom after spending nearly a month in captivity.

Abia State Commissioner for Information, Prince Okey Kanu, disclosed this during a press briefing in Umuahia, confirming that Lawson was rescued alive and in good health.

“He was rescued alive about two days ago and is hale and hearty,” Kanu stated, while refraining from providing further details on the operation.

Lawson, also known as SOBAS, was abducted while returning to Port Harcourt from his hometown in Arochukwu, Abia State. Armed men ambushed his motorcade at Azumini, Ukwa East Local Government Area, killing his driver and a security escort before taking him away.

According to the Abia State Police Public Relations Officer, Maureen Chinaka, the assailants, driving a dark blue Sienna, opened fire on Lawson’s convoy before dragging him into their vehicle and fleeing.

Following the incident, the Abia State Government has issued a stern warning to traditional rulers and community leaders, urging them to stop harbouring criminals in their domains.

Commissioner Kanu emphasized that anyone found aiding criminals would face severe consequences.

“Town unions and traditional rulers must be vigilant and report suspicious activities to security agents. If you are caught protecting criminals, you will be treated as one,” he warned.

He urged residents to be security-conscious and to report any unusual activities in their communities.

 “When you see something, say something. Go even further—take action by discreetly reporting to security agencies,” Kanu added.

He also hinted that security agencies would start monitoring traditional rulers to identify those shielding criminal elements, adding that sanctions would be imposed where necessary.

Meanwhile, Commissioner Kanu provided updates on five newly completed road projects, set for inauguration soon. These include: Umuahia-Bende Road (Phase 1 and 2) – 19.5km. Igbere Junction to Onu Roundabout – 1.76km. Umookogbuo Road – 2.5km. Isieketa-Obikabia Road (Isiala Ngwa South LGA) – 8.3km (rehabilitated). Obehie-Ezendioma Road (Ukwa West LGA)

Kanu noted that the 19.5km Umuahia-Bende federal road had exceeded its lifespan and required complete reconstruction. However, since it is a federal road, discussions with the Federal Government would be necessary before any major intervention.

The Umuahia Urban Renewal Project, aimed at transforming the state capital into a modern city, is also making significant progress, according to the commissioner.

He highlighted ongoing projects, including: Reconstruction and expansion of Library Avenue and Akanu Ibiam Road to FMC Junction. Bus terminal and new bus shelters at strategic locations

“These improvements will change the look and feel of Umuahia, making it a more modern and organized city,” Kanu stated.

He further urged commercial vehicle operators in the state to register their vehicles, as government enforcement of the directive would soon begin.

The Abia State Government reassured residents of its commitment to security, infrastructure development, and urban renewal, urging everyone to remain vigilant and support government efforts.
