An expert in advancement of stainless steel and high performance alloys has hinted that Nigeria’s aerospace, oil and gas, and manufacturing sectors face persistent challenges due to wear and corrosion.
According to him, these challenges have significant impact on equipment reliability, maintenance costs, and operational efficiency.
He pointed out that In the oil and gas industry, pipelines and offshore structures are constantly exposed to saline environments, high temperatures, and aggressive chemicals, accelerating material degradation.
Similarly, aircraft turbine blades and landing gears endure extreme heat and oxidative wear, leading to component failures that compromise safety and performance.
The cumulative effect of these issues results in frequent equipment breakdowns, increased maintenance expenses, and reduced overall efficiency, hindering industrial growth.
Amidst Nigeria’s drive for industrial advancement, groundbreaking research in wear-resistant coatings is emerging as a solution to these challenges.
These innovations have the potential to transform the aerospace, automotive, oil and gas, and steel sectors by significantly enhancing material durability and performance under harsh operating conditions.
Advanced coating technologies can extend the lifespan of critical machine components, reducing the need for frequent replacements and unplanned maintenance, which in turn ensures cost savings and improved operational safety.
Oluwadamilola Ogunmola, a materials engineer and researcher, has pioneered a study focusing on next-generation carbide-based coatings.
His research aims to mitigate material degradation caused by wear and corrosion, particularly in high-temperature industrial applications where equipment failures lead to safety risks and operational inefficiencies.
Ogunmola’s work explores the deposition of Cr₃C₂-NiCr coatings using High-Velocity Air Fuel (HVAF) and Air Plasma Spray (APS) methods, both of which enhance component longevity and operational efficiency.
Among these techniques, HVAF Cr₃C₂-25NiCr has demonstrated superior performance, making it the most suitable recommendation for corrosion and wear-resistant applications in extreme conditions.
By integrating these advanced coatings into industrial applications, Nigerian industries stand to benefit significantly.
Ogunmola highlights that adopting HVAF and APS coatings can boost efficiency, minimise downtime, and drastically cut maintenance costs.
Moreover, the research findings can support local aerospace and automotive industries by improving engine components, turbine blades, and high-friction parts—all of which require exceptional wear resistance.
