The South Saharan Social Development Organization (SSDO) and the Justice Development and Peace Commission (JDPC) have urged the federal and state governments to take immediate action to address the escalating crisis in Abor Isiala and Ihenyi communities of Eha-Amufu, Isi-Uzo Local Government Area, Enugu State.

During a press briefing in Enugu, representatives of both organizations condemned the ongoing attacks that have led to loss of lives, displacement, and economic devastation.

Speaking to journalists, JDPC Director Rev. Fr. Donatus Onuigbo described the humanitarian crisis, stating that over 300 individuals in Abor Isiala and 100 in Ihenyi have been affected, with more than 20 lives lost. He noted that 1,064 children remain out of school, with only 456 returning.

The crisis has been fueled by land disputes and conflicts over grazing rights, leading to repeated attacks by armed assailants. Women and children have been disproportionately affected, suffering from hunger, displacement, and, in some cases, brutal sexual violence.

Fr. Onuigbo criticized the intermittent deployment of security forces, calling for a permanent security presence. He also urged the state government, led by Governor Peter Ndubuisi Mbah, to take decisive action to end the violence.

“We demand urgent government intervention, including the arrest and prosecution of perpetrators, sustained security deployment, and immediate humanitarian relief for affected families,” he stated.

The organizations called for emergency aid, including food, clothing, medical supplies, and financial assistance, to support displaced families and help restore stability to the region.
