A France-based International Humanitarian Organization, Christened Shallow Waters , has expressed deep concern over the suspension of Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan by the Nigerian Senate. The National Coordinator of the International Society of Female Professionals, Team Africa, a wing of the above mentioned Organization, Mrs Igbinedion Charlotte, described the suspension as a dangerous precedent for women in politics and a potential abuse of legislative power.

Senator Akpoti-Uduaghan, who represents Kogi Central, was suspended after accusing Senate President Godswill Akpabio of sexual harassment. Her suspension came shortly after a controversial incident regarding her seating arrangement in the Senate chamber, during which her nameplate was allegedly removed. The Senate leadership cited violations of legislative rules, including refusal to sit in her assigned seat, speaking without recognition, and disruptive conduct, as justification for the disciplinary action.

Critics, however, argue that the suspension is a retaliatory measure designed to silence her and deflect attention from the sexual harassment allegations against Senate President Akpabio. Shallow Waters Organization insists that the action infringes on her fundamental human rights, including freedom of expression and protection from discrimination.

Team Africa, in solidarity with the Shallow Waters International Organization, founded by Dr Smiles Oghoghosa Abusomwan has strongly condemned the Senate’s decision and called for the immediate reinstatement of Senator Akpoti-Uduaghan. The group argues that the Senate’s actions reflect a wider pattern of gender-based discrimination in Nigerian politics, where women are systematically marginalized.

The organization has outlined four key demands, beginning with an independent and impartial investigation into Senator Akpoti-Uduaghan’s allegations against Akpabio. They insist that any inquiry must be free from political influence to ensure justice and transparency.

Secondly, they called for robust protections for whistleblowers to safeguard individuals who speak out against misconduct. They stressed that no woman should face retaliation for exposing abuse, particularly within Nigeria’s highest legislative body.

In addition, the Delta State coordinator in the person of Mrs Itobore Latoya of the organization urged for a comprehensive reform of Senate procedures to prevent their misuse as a tool for political persecution. According to her, disciplinary measures should not be weaponized to suppress dissent or intimidate lawmakers.

The organization also called for international oversight, urging bodies such as the Inter-Parliamentary Union to intervene and monitor the situation. They believe external scrutiny is necessary to ensure that due process is followed in resolving the matter.

The suspension of Senator Akpoti-Uduaghan has sparked outrage among gender rights activists, who argue that her case highlights the broader struggles women face in Nigerian politics. Many see it as an attempt to discourage women from actively participating in governance.

Signed by Mrs. Igbinedion Charlotte, National Coordinator, and Mrs. Itobore Latoya, Delta State Coordinator, the statement reaffirmed their commitment to advocating for justice and a political landscape where women are not punished for speaking out. The group vowed to continue pushing for a fair and inclusive system where every voice is respected.
