The President of the Nigerian Society of Engineers, Engr. Margaret Oguntala, FNSE has reaffirmed the commitment of the Society to harness the power of engineering to drive sustainable development and improve the lives of our people as a way of commemorating this year’s World Engineering Day.

Oguntala who commended the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation (UNESCO) for instituting the World Engineering Day said, the event is birthed in recognition of the efforts of Engineers and engineering as essential pillars of sustainable development.

According this, “This initiative has amplified the visibility of our profession and underscored the critical role Engineers play in shaping a better world for all.

“Since its inception, Nigerian Engineers have actively participated in the annual WED celebrations, demonstrating our commitment to excellence, innovation and sustainable development. I commend every Nigerian Engineer, both at home and in the Diaspora for their firm dedication and contributions to national and global development.”

This year’s global theme by the World Federation of Engineering Organisations, WFEO, being, “Shaping Our Sustainable Future through Engineering” is particularly apt, as it highlights the transformative impact of engineering in addressing global challenges.

“Engineers are at the heart of sustainable solutions, from climate change mitigation and clean energy development to water management, infrastructure resilience, and digital transformation.

“I appreciate our policymakers, leading scientists, captains of industry and all stakeholders for working together with Nigerian Engineers over the years. Your collaboration has been instrumental in ensuring that engineering continues to be a driving force for progress and development.

“I am optimistic that our joint efforts will bring about the much needed transformation in advancing our economy and shaping a sustainable future for our country through engineering.

“The continued cooperation and support of all stakeholders with Nigerian Engineers are essential to effectively tackle the enormous task of infrastructure development and maintenance across the country”, she said.

On her part, Chairman, Association of Professional Women Engineers of Nigeria, APWEN Lagos chapter, Engr. Atinuke Owolabi, FNSE, reiterates that the association is committed to empowering female engineers with the skills, knowledge, and opportunities to drive innovation, sustainability, and national development.

“At APWENLagos, we believe that empowering female engineers is key to driving sustainable innovation. Our initiatives equip women with the skills and opportunities to transform industries and communities. By investing in female engineers, we are investing in a more inclusive, resilient, and prosperous future.

“Over the past year, we have significantly advanced STEM education, mentorship, and hands-on training, inspiring the next generation of female engineers. Through our STEM and mentorship programs, we have impacted over 1,000 girls across Lagos State, equipping them with the confidence and knowledge to pursue careers in engineering.

“APWENLagos has introduced a Reverse Mentorship Initiative, where young engineers mentor senior professionals on emerging technologies, digital skills, and innovation trends.

“This two-way learning environment allows early-career female engineers to provide insights on AI, cybersecurity, renewable energy, and digital transformation, while experienced professionals offer guidance on industry leadership, project management, and technical expertise,” she said.
