The Pan-Yoruba socio-political group, Afenifere, has called for a thorough investigation into the allegations of sexual harassment and intimidation leveled against Senate President, Senator Godswill Akpabio, by Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan.
In a statement issued by its National Organizing Secretary, Otunba Kole Omololu, the group emphasized the need for due process, warning against condemning Akpabio without concrete evidence.
“We in Afenifere note and appreciate the political stability brought about by the calm, thoughtful, and patriotic leadership of the National Assembly under Senate President Godswill Akpabio. He has played a crucial role in fostering Executive-Legislative synergy, a rare achievement in Nigeria’s democratic governance.”
The statement further urged caution in handling the allegations, noting that they surfaced following a disciplinary action taken against Senator Akpoti-Uduaghan by the Senate President.
“Of course, the allegations should be investigated by a Senate Committee. However, we cannot ignore the timing, which coincides with the Senate President’s disciplinary action against Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan.”
“Hopefully, this is not a reaction driven by emotions. The nation must carefully assess the claims to determine whether they are legitimate or influenced by animosity over the disciplinary measure.”
Without passing judgment, Afenifere reaffirmed its support for Akpabio, commending him for his leadership during a period of political, economic, and social reforms under the Renewed Hope agenda.
