Nigerian music icon Muma Gee has spoken out about a harrowing encounter with the Counter-Terrorism Unit of the Nigerian Police, alleging that police brutalised and a threatened  her life.

The incident occurred in Port Harcourt, Rivers State, where she was dropping off relatives after attending her brother’s funeral.

Muma Gee recounted how armed police officers attacked her vehicle, violently hitting it with their guns and demanding she roll down her window.

Upon complying, two officers allegedly entered her car, ransacked it, and threatened to shoot if she made any move. This incident has sparked fresh concerns over police brutality in Nigeria, echoing the #EndSARS protests that began in 2020 .

The movement sought to end the Special Anti-Robbery Squad’s (SARS) brutality and extortion, but four years later, many victims still await justice .

Muma Gee’s experience highlights the ongoing issue of police impunity in Nigeria. Despite promises of reform, the Nigerian Police Force continues to face criticism for human rights abuses, including extrajudicial killings, torture, and extortion .

The Nigerian authorities must address these human rights violations and ensure accountability for perpetrators to restore trust in the police force. As Muma Gee warned, “If these excesses are not checked, then the safety of Nigerians remains in jeopardy. “As I speak to you now, my car is tragically damaged due to the brutal force and constant pounding by their guns while they attempted to force their way in,” she lamented.
