The President of the Senate, His Excellency, Distinguished Senator Godswill Akpabio, GCON, has expressed profound sorrow over the passing of Pa Edwin Clark, describing his death as a monumental loss to Nigeria, the Niger Delta, and all who value unity, fairness, and national progress.

In a heartfelt condolence message, Senator Akpabio eulogized Pa Clark as a towering statesman whose unwavering commitment to justice and national unity will be remembered for generations to come.

“I am deeply saddened by the passing of Pa Edwin Clark, a renowned statesman, nationalist, and Ijaw leader. His dedication to Nigeria’s unity and development will remain evergreen in the hearts of those who knew him. As a nation, we have lost a true patriot and a champion of justice,” Akpabio said.

At 97, Pa Edwin Clark’s life was a testament to resilience, integrity, and a steadfast belief in the promise of Nigeria. From his early days as a councillor to serving as a federal minister and later as a political advisor to President Goodluck Jonathan, he remained a guiding light and moral compass for the nation.

Pa Clark was renowned as a vocal advocate for the Niger Delta region, championing equity, resource control, and the rights of the oppressed. He consistently spoke truth to power, embodying the principle that leadership is a duty rather than a privilege.

“Pa Clark’s remarkable life was marked by strength and an undying commitment to the unity of this country. His voice, though now silenced, will echo in the annals of our history, urging us always toward justice, fairness, and national cohesion,” Akpabio added.

The Senate President also reflected on his personal relationship with Pa Clark, recalling the elder statesman’s unwavering support during his bid for the Senate Presidency.

“Beyond his national impact, I remember with deep gratitude his unwavering support for me, especially when I visited to seek his blessing and endorsement. His counsel was always rooted in wisdom, his encouragement a reflection of his deep commitment to responsible leadership,” he said.

Akpabio shared a poignant memory of recently sending emissaries to check on Pa Clark, unaware that it would be the last communication they would share.

“I did not know that he was preparing for a greater journey, leaving behind the toils of this earth for the eternal peace of the better world beyond,” he reflected.

On behalf of his family, the people of Akwa Ibom North West Senatorial District, and the entire Senate, Akpabio extended his deepest condolences to Pa Clark’s family, the Pan Niger Delta Forum (PANDEF), the people and government of Delta State, and all Nigerians who were touched by his life and legacy.
