SOKOTO: The General Manager of the Sokoto State Water Board, Engr. Aminu Mika’ilu Haruna, has highlighted several challenges that hinder the efficient water supply in the state metropolis, Chief among these challenges is the rampant vandalism of water processing machines and facilities, which has become a significant barrier to providing consistent access to water at various locations.
One of the primary obstacles to water distribution in Sokoto according to the General Manager is the age, outdated and obsolete machinery used for the treatment and supply water in the state capital.
” These facilities require constant maintenance, and given their age, they are increasingly prone to malfunction.”
” Unfortunately, the issue of vandalism worsens the situation, as it further disrupts the already fragile system”.
“Vandalism and theft of crucial water board equipment and other infrastructures have become pressing issues.”
” In particular, vandals often target essential components, such as electricity cables, which are vital for the operation of water processing machines. As a result, the board faces significant operational setbacks in supplying water to residents.”
In response to the growing concern, several vandals have been apprehended, prosecuted, and sentenced to varying prison terms. Despite these efforts, the problem persists, and the board continues to battle against these illegal activities.
Engr. Haruna stated that although the board strives to provide water to every corner of the state, it cannot guarantee a flawless 100% water supply. However, he assured the public that the water supply is above average, considering the numerous challenges the board faces.
“Realistically, the board is unable to ensure water access for every household across the entire state. However, Haruna expressed optimism, mentioning that over 70% of the residents within the state metropolis currently have access to potable drinking water.”
“The Sokoto State Water Board continues to face numerous challenges in providing water to communities across the state. Among the most pressing issues are the outdated machinery and the need for constant repairs and maintenance.”
“Lack of available spare parts in Sokoto exacerbates these difficulties. To source the necessary parts, the board often has to send orders outside the state, further delaying repairs and maintenance.”
“Another significant hurdle in the water supply system is the frequent power outages experienced in the state. Since all water processing machines depend on a stable power supply, frequent fluctuations in voltage—whether low, high, or unstable—can lead to faults in the machines, ” These disruptions have an adverse effect on the board’s ability to maintain continuous water production.”
In an effort to tackle these power-related challenges, the board has taken aggressive steps to ensure a more reliable and uninterrupted power supply to all parts of the state capital”.
“The board is working towards providing alternative power supply generators at all treatment and pumping stations with a view to mitigate the effects of power outages from the national grid”, Says the General Manager
