As data science continues to revolutionize various sectors, one Nigerian innovator is leveraging its potential to transform healthcare outcomes across the country.
Precious Orekha, a distinguished data scientist and current master’s candidate in Data Science at Drexel University, is leading the charge in integrating AI and data science to address Nigeria’s pressing healthcare challenges. His vision aims not only to enhance healthcare delivery but also to ensure that innovation is applied ethically and inclusively.
For Precious Orekha, data science is more than just a career; it is a powerful tool for solving critical problems and creating sustainable solutions. His work focuses on how data-driven innovations can improve healthcare delivery, especially in underserved areas of Nigeria. From disease prediction models to AI-powered diagnostic tools, Orekha’s projects are designed to bring lasting improvements to healthcare access, affordability, and quality.
One of Orekha’s standout achievements is the development of a disease prediction model that helps predict cholera outbreaks in vulnerable Nigerian communities. Using data from environmental sensors, rainfall patterns, and historical trends, the model enables health officials to intervene early, preventing potential outbreaks and saving lives. “This project demonstrated the power of data to prevent crises rather than simply respond to them,” Orekha notes.
In addition, he co-led the creation of an AI-powered diagnostic tool in March 2023, aimed at supporting under-resourced healthcare facilities in rural Nigeria. The tool helps bridge the gap where access to specialists is limited, empowering local healthcare providers to offer better patient care.
Orekha emphasizes the importance of ethics in the application of data science. His approach advocates for transparent, inclusive data practices that prioritize patient privacy and security. “Ethics is the foundation of trust,” he states. “Without trust, even the most groundbreaking technologies lose their impact.” Orekha’s recommendations have shaped policies that aim to balance innovation with privacy, particularly in the healthcare sector.
Beyond his technical accomplishments, Orekha is dedicated to mentorship and education. As a co-founder of the platform Tech with I-Dra, he has trained hundreds of young Nigerians, equipping them with the skills to thrive in a data-driven economy. “Our goal is to create problem-solvers,” he says. “When we empower individuals, they go on to create solutions that transform entire communities.”
Through his work with Hamoye AI Labs, Orekha has also guided aspiring data scientists, helping them apply their skills to real-world challenges. “Seeing others succeed and carry the torch of innovation is one of the most rewarding aspects of my work,” he reflects.
Looking to the future, Orekha envisions a healthcare system in Nigeria that is driven by data science, where technology improves accessibility and efficiency while reducing costs. He calls for greater collaboration between governments, private organizations, and tech leaders to harness the potential of AI and data science in healthcare.
He also stresses the importance of inclusivity in developing AI solutions. “We must ensure that the technologies we develop address the needs of all Nigerians, especially those in underserved communities,” Orekha asserts.
Precious Orekha’s work stands as a testament to the transformative power of data science in tackling Nigeria’s healthcare challenges. By aligning innovation with purpose, he is not only improving healthcare outcomes but also creating opportunities for others to follow in his footsteps. As Orekha himself says, “Data science should not just be about solving problems—it should also involve creating opportunities and shaping a better future for all.”
