Bukunmi Adelani’s jokes have deliberately purveyed Yoruba culture, especially because it is his heritage and story. And that originality has become the suave of his performance.
At a comedy conference held for realtors at the o2 arena, in London, he lures in their attention with a bit of self-shaming, harping on his indigent days in Lagos.
He yaps about the need to consider material wealth, complexion, height and other mundane niceties when looking for love.
And altogether offers his own experiences as the sacrificial lamb of the material. Yet, it’s an easy breezy delivery because he’s telling his own stories, pulling in crowd attention with freudian slips and relatable dramatic gestures mimicking his mother’s anxiety like flapping his thighs or scratching his eyebrow.
Bukunmi Preacher’s rich storytelling, especially with his plot and setting, enrich the sensory experience of the comedy, and whenever familiar Nigerian locations like Odugbolu, Iyana Ipaja, Surulere, etc., are woven into the lines, the joke delivers like a sugary cocktail, buzzing with a sweet aftertaste.
During his performance at a recently held worship session in Kent, London, dubbed, Praise Experience, Bukunmi’s comedy soared with a similar aftertaste. Another sweet spot of his performance would be his familiar introduction, ridiculously including his genotype and blood group. If stupidity is of poor taste, it’s actually worth a brilliant joke in the hands of a talented comic like Bukunmi Preacher. His easy transitions, slotting in jokes, all written with the undertone of family life and relationships, keep their heartbeat with his own composure. He’s both the puppet and puppeteer of sorts, pausing speech to accentuate with action, and even pausing both to stir audience response, all like clockwork — but it all seems natural to him. While his jokes definitely need to broaden in range, and sometimes add technical depth, the overall performance keeps its promise to the crowd: to make them laugh, and also imagine themselves in the jokes.
