Former governor of old Anambra State, Senator Jim Ifeanyichukwu Nwobodo, has urged youths to embrace resilience, commitment, and a serious approach to sports to unlock their full potential.

Nwobodo made this appeal during the grand finale of the “Enugu South Unity Cup” football competition, held at Obeagu Uno on Thursday evening. The event was sponsored by the Chairman of the Local Government Area, Hon. Caleb Ani.

While presenting the trophy to the winners, Senator Nwobodo emphasized the societal significance of sports, its transformative power, and its potential to elevate individuals to prominent positions. He expressed optimism about the talent on display during the tournament, predicting that some players could represent Nigeria internationally, just as former Super Eagles captain, Kanu Nwankwo, achieved global acclaim.

“Sports can lift you high and make you important in society,” Nwobodo remarked, encouraging the youth to pursue their athletic ambitions with dedication.

Ward 8 emerged victorious in the Enugu South Unity Cup, defeating Ward 3 by 5-4 in a penalty shootout after the match ended in a 1-1 draw at full time.

For their outstanding performance, Ward 8 received a cash prize of ₦1 million, while the first runners-up, Ward 3, were awarded ₦500,000. The second runners-up were given a consolation prize of ₦250,000.

Hon. Caleb Ani, the council chairman and tournament sponsor, stated that the competition aimed to identify and nurture talent while fostering unity among residents of Enugu South.

“The tournament was organized to ensure unity among the youths of Enugu South. The large turnout here today reflects the joy and harmony this event has brought,” Ani noted.

He pledged to sustain the tournament and support other sporting activities throughout his tenure, emphasizing his personal passion for sports.

“I am a sportsman myself, and as long as I remain the chairman of the council, I will continue to support sports initiatives, not just football,” Ani affirmed.

The Special Adviser on Youth and Sports, Nnamani Nobert Chijoke, also expressed satisfaction with the peaceful conclusion of the tournament. He thanked Hon. Ani for sponsoring the event, highlighting its impact on the youth.

“This is a welcome development, as it has provided our youth with the platform to showcase their God-given talents,” Chijoke said.
