Calendars have been used throughout the ages as a way of organising one’s work, social, or religious events into a single view. The dawn of mobile applications meant that this could be taken on the go and provide necessary reminders to get things done at ease. For some, especially business users, the calendar is the most important app on their phone.
Incidentally, most mobile phone users particularly in the emerging markets under-utilise this app. It is common knowledge to see mobile users regretting having missed a meeting because it skipped their minds even when the calendar app is right there on the mobile phones to remind them.
However, one of the problems identified is how to set up the application.
Unlike many traditional cell phones, smartphones allow individual users to install, configure and run applications of their choosing. A smartphone offers the ability to conform the device to your particular way of doing things.
Most standard cell-phone software offers only limited choices for re-configuration, forcing you to adapt to the way it’s set up. On a standard phone, whether or not you like the built-in calendar application, you are stuck with it except for a few minor tweaks. If that phone were a smartphone, you could install any compatible calendar application you like.
Since the mobile phones are the most common handheld devices today, a smartphone is usually either a phone with added PDA capabilities or a PDA with added phone capabilities.
The Calendar app works with Google Calendar web-based service for creating and managing events, meetings, and appointments.
When you first set up your phone, you configure it to use an existing Google Account, or you create a new one. The first time you open the Calendar application on your phone, it displays any existing calendar events from your Google Account on the web.
However, to set it on your own you need to take some practical steps:
*Open you calendar by either tapping on the Google Calendar widget on your homescreen or launch Calendar application Image from Applications tray. Then, press Menu to get Calendar options.
*Touch New Event to open the Event details screen. You can also touch & hold a spot in Day, Week, or Month view to open a menu where you can touch New Event, to open the Event details screen with that day and time pre-entered. Touch “Today” icon to move attention to the current day.
Another step after these, is to add details about the event. Tap in a text box for the keyboard to enter a name, time, and optional additional events about the event, just as you do in Google Calendar on the web. Any contacts from your established Gmail, Enterprise and Social Networking accounts can be searched to contact for an event. If you have more than one calendar, you can choose the calendar you want to add the event to.
