As part of its commitment to supporting the less privileged during the festive season, the Lagos State Branch of the Medical Women’s Association of Nigeria (MWAN) has donated food, toiletries, and other essentials to 285 inmates at the Women’s Correctional Centre, Kirikiri.

Led by its President, Dr. Funmi Ige, MWAN executives handed over the items during a charity visit to the facility on Saturday, marking Christmas and New Year celebrations. The donations included bags of rice, sanitary pads, toiletries, medications, clothes, milk, 100 bags of sachet water, footwear, drinks, and confectioneries. In addition to material support, the team provided health and psychological talks aimed at enhancing the inmates’ well-being.

Dr. Ige emphasized that the visit aligns with MWAN’s tradition of supporting vulnerable groups in society. She highlighted the presence of over 15 nursing mothers and children in the facility, stating that their health and welfare were a priority for the association.

Calling on individuals and organizations to support the less privileged, Ige noted MWAN’s plans to address additional needs at the facility, including installing a borehole, rehabilitating a collapsing septic tank, and providing more clothing for the inmates.

Former MWAN President, Dr. Omowunmi Bakare, encouraged inmates to seek professional medical assistance for any health challenges, emphasizing the importance of early intervention. She stressed that being in custody should not hinder the inmates from prioritizing their health and well-being.

“You must pay attention to your menstrual cycle and report any changes, unhealthy discharge, or irregularities. Ensure you use proper sanitary pads during your period to maintain hygiene and avoid health issues,” she advised.

Dr. Folake Ojo, another member of the team, gave insights into maintaining personal and oral hygiene. She urged the inmates to brush their teeth twice daily, use fluoride toothpaste, and limit sugary foods and drinks to prevent dental issues.

“Trim your hair, wash regularly with disinfectants, and keep your sensitive areas clean to avoid discomfort or infections. Engage in recreational activities such as singing or sports to relieve stress and promote mental health,” she added.

Deputy Comptroller of the Female Kirikiri Custodial Centre, Mrs. Beatrice Onyemaechi, expressed gratitude to the MWAN team, assuring them that the donated items would be equitably distributed for the benefit of all inmates.

The visit by MWAN not only provided material relief but also emphasized the importance of health, hygiene, and emotional well-being for the inmates, reinforcing the need for collective efforts to support vulnerable populations.
