Olawale Lawal, the U.S.-based Fuji artiste formerly known as Mayordrums, has embraced a fresh identity and a new musical outlook. Now going by Wale Currency, the musician shared with Potpourri how the change has redefined his confidence and artistic vision.

“The name change has also changed my approach to the music. I’m more confident in my abilities now more than ever. My first single, FYI, without a feature, has been an opportunity to focus on unique vocal delivery layered with melodies on heavy African percussion. My goal is to take American Fuji to the global stage. Fans can expect more experimentation with Fuji sounds, ensuring even the legends of the genre will be proud of the results.”

Reflecting on the inspiration behind his new moniker, Wale Currency revealed that the name came from a moment of hardship and aspiration. “The inspiration for the name change came from pure imagination.At the time, I was dead broke and desperate to become a person of value among people. The name ‘Currency’ had a swag to it, and its definition gave me a sense of hope and purpose.”

The transformation from Mayordrums to Wale Currency has been years in the making. “It was around 2022 that I coined the name, but I officially made the change this year,” he noted.

With a bold new identity and ambitious plans for his career, Wale Currency is determined to push Fuji music to unprecedented heights. “This journey is about proving that American Fuji has a place on the global stage,” he said, brimming with optimism for what lies ahead.
