Universities and higher education institutions are increasingly offering programs and courses in data science, machine learning, and artificial intelligence. However, there is a need for more practical training and industry collaboration to equip students with the skills demanded by the labor market. Nigerian businesses, particularly in sectors like fintech, e-commerce, and telecom, have begun leveraging data science to optimize operations, improve customer experiences, and drive innovation. Despite these positive strides, the penetration of data science remains limited by factors such as a shortage of skilled professionals, low data literacy in the general population, poor data infrastructure, and limited access to quality datasets.

“Data science holds immense potential in emerging economies like Nigeria,” Blessing explains. “With the right infrastructure and investment in education, data science can empower individuals and organizations to drive real change. However, it requires collaboration between governments, educational institutions, and the private sector to create an ecosystem that supports growth in the field.”

Blessing notes that while Nigeria has a growing number of talented data scientists, there is a pressing need to build more industry-relevant skills. “Many Nigerian graduates have theoretical knowledge, but there’s a gap when it comes to applying those skills in real-world scenarios,” she adds. “It’s crucial for students and professionals to focus on hands-on projects, internships, and continuous learning to stay competitive in the fast-evolving field of data science.”

According to a 2022 report by the World Bank, Nigeria’s internet penetration rate has reached 50%, providing a solid foundation for data collection and analysis. The Nigerian Data Protection Regulation (NDPR) was enacted in 2019, laying the legal framework for data privacy and security. The Nigerian tech industry is expected to reach $9 billion by 2025, with data-driven innovations playing a central role.

To fully realize the potential of data science, Nigeria must invest in quality education and training programs that emphasize hands-on, practical learning. This includes building partnerships with global tech firms and universities to bring cutting-edge research and knowledge to Nigeria. For data science to thrive, Nigeria must develop robust data infrastructure, including improved internet connectivity, data storage systems, and cloud services. This will ensure data is accessible and usable for analysis. The government should collaborate with the private sector to create policies that encourage data science innovation. This includes supporting startups, fostering talent, and providing incentives for companies that invest in data-driven technologies. Governments should leverage data science for better policy-making. From urban planning to healthcare delivery, data-driven approaches can lead to more effective and transparent governance. It’s crucial for both the public and private sectors to promote a culture of data literacy. Encouraging data usage in everyday decision-making across industries will accelerate Nigeria’s digital transformation.
