…destroys property worth millions of naira

Several property worth millions of naira was destroyed on Saturday, in a fire that gutted a two-storey building at number 21, Oduntan Street, Mushin area of Lagos State.

The affected building comprises of two units of 3-bedroom flats. The second floor of tte building was gutted by fire that reportedly started from the front flat before it escalated to the back flat.

The raging fire which started mid afternoon, was subsequently put out by men of the Lagos Stae Fire and Rescue Service, in collaboration with Lagos State Emergency Management Agency, LASEMA, Nigeria Police, among other rescue team.

According to Permanent Secretary, LASEMA, Olufemi Oke-Osanyintolu, preliminary investigations conducted by the agency’s Eagle response team attributed immediate cause of the fire to gas leakage from a gas cylinder in one of the flats on the second floor.

Fortunately, there was no loss of life and no injuries sustained as a result of the incident.

“The quick response and intervention of LASEMA’s Eagle Response Team alongside LRU Fire Unit, and other responders curtailed the fire from spreading to other buildings, while officials of the Nigeria Police Force secured the incident area, and conducted crowd control.

“The entire roof and ceilings were razed by the fire. Personal belongings of the occupants were equally razed.

“Valuables and money discovered by the LRU fire fighters during the Search and Rescue Operation was handed over to the owners immediately at the incident scene.

“Occupants of the affected building were sensitized on the safe use of gas cylinders, electrical appliances, and necessary their repairs to prevent future incidents,” Oke-Osanyintolu stated.
