Ebonyi Commissioner urges ceasefire in land dispute between Akaeze, Ishiagu communities

…Calls on Stakeholders to Embrace Peace

In a bid to resolve the escalating land dispute between Umobor Village in Akaeze Community and Ogwor Village in Ishiagu Community, both in Ivo Local Government Area of Ebonyi State, the Commissioner for Border, Peace, and Conflict Resolution, Dr. Donatus Ilang, has called for an immediate ceasefire.

Dr. Ilang made this appeal during a fact-finding mission to the disputed area, aimed at verifying claims made by both parties regarding the contested boundaries. The mission also sought to map the disputed land for identification and reconciliation purposes.

Expressing disappointment over the absence of Umobor stakeholders, despite invitations sent through the Coordinator of Akaeze Development Center, Hon. Barr. Jasper Chinasa Okorie, and a peace committee, Dr. Ilang commended the Ogwor villagers for their cooperation. He emphasized the need for a follow-up visit after further consultations with both parties to ensure lasting peace.

Condemning the violence and destruction that have characterized the dispute, Dr. Ilang warned that any culprits found responsible for killings or property damage would face severe penalties. He urged stakeholders from both villages to support the state government’s peace efforts to prevent further crises.

Highlighting the critical role of youth in fostering peace or fueling conflict, Dr. Ilang appealed to young people from both communities to adopt peaceful solutions. He referenced the leadership of Governor Francis Ogbonna Nwifuru, whom he described as a beacon of peace, urging the youth to follow the governor’s example and recognize that development is impossible without peace.

“Without peace, the land will not develop, and those involved in escalating the crisis may not live to tell the story,” the Commissioner warned, urging all parties to prioritize reconciliation and dialogue.

The Ministry of Border, Peace, and Conflict Resolution remains committed to fostering peaceful coexistence among villages and communities within and beyond Ebonyi State.
