The Centre for Convention on Democratic Integrity Ltd/Gte (CCDI) has refuted claims that Governor Siminalayi Fubara of Rivers State raised the state’s debt from N5 billion to N213 billion within a year.
The CCDI’s Permanent Representative, Mr. Olufemi Aduwo, described the allegations as a misrepresentation of facts.
In a statement titled “Fubara’s Fiscal Prudence: Debunking Misleading Claims About Rivers’ Debt,” Aduwo clarified that Rivers State’s domestic debt was already at N389.20 billion as of June 2023, long before Governor Fubara’s tenure. He emphasized that the debt was inherited and not attributable to Fubara’s administration.
Aduwo explained that constitutionally, states can borrow funds as long as they are allocated to developmental projects. He highlighted that the only loan secured under Fubara’s administration was for the Ring Road project, a crucial infrastructure initiative aimed at enhancing economic growth and connectivity. According to Aduwo, the loan is being properly serviced, showcasing Fubara’s commitment to fiscal responsibility.
He further stated that Governor Fubara has faced political persecution and media attacks since assuming office, accusing certain outlets of sensationalism and misinformation. Aduwo called for responsible journalism, urging media organizations to prioritize accuracy and fairness.
“It is unjust to associate Fubara with debts incurred before his tenure,” Aduwo remarked, labeling such claims as dishonest and a distraction from pressing developmental issues. He encouraged public discourse to focus on facts and transparency, stressing that the people of Rivers State deserve credible and unbiased reporting.
