Governor ‘Seyi Makinde has called for enhanced collaboration among stakeholders to drive economic growth in local governments throughout Oyo State.

He made the appeal during the Oluyole Economy & Security Summit 2024, held at the Oluyole Local Government Secretariat in Idi-Ayunre, under the theme, “Expanding Grassroots Economy, Enhancing Community-Based Security.”

At the summit, stakeholders, including government officials, business leaders, and security experts, gathered to discuss the importance of partnerships between local firms and the Council. Key figures included Hon. Abdulmojeed Mogbonjubola, the state Commissioner for Environment and chairman of the summit; Compol Fatai Owoseni (rtd), Special Adviser on Security to the governor; and Engr. Akeem Olatunji, chairman of the Oluyole Local Government.

Governor Makinde emphasised that economic prosperity and security are interconnected, stating, “To achieve sustainable development, we must work together. Effective partnerships can lead to better resource management and create investment opportunities that benefit our communities.”

He noted that there can’t be economic prosperity where there is insecurity, stressing the need for a united front to address these issues.

In his keynote address, Mr. Femi Awakan, chairman of the Oyo State Board of Internal Revenue, discussed the causes and implications of the current economic downturn in Nigeria.

He proposed strategic reforms and called for careful planning in policy formulation and project execution to enhance grassroots economic performance.

The event featured a panel discussion that explored strategies for promoting collaboration between firms and stakeholders.

Compol Owoseni commended Governor Makinde’s administration for its achievements in the security sector, urging the public to contribute by providing timely and accurate information through dedicated channels such as the 615 Code for crime prevention.

Other notable speakers included the Director-General of the Oyo State Mineral Development Agency, Mr. Abiodun Oni, who praised the summit’s focus on economic expansion and encouraged more local governments to adopt similar initiatives.

He assured participants that his agency is ready to collaborate with Oluyole Local Government to ensure a mutually beneficial outcome for all stakeholders.

Earlier, Engr. Akeem Olatunji highlighted that the summit aimed to align the objectives of industries with local governance for the benefit of the community.

“We want companies and industries to be on the same page with the local government for the betterment of our people in terms of corporate social responsibility and internally generated revenue,” he said.

Stakeholders lamented the lack of corporate social responsibility initiatives from private firms operating in Oluyole, calling on the Manufacturers Association of Nigeria (MAN) to lead efforts in encouraging its members to engage more actively with their host communities.

The summit concluded with a communique praising the initiative and recognizing its significance in deepening economic and social integration within Oyo State.

Participants agreed that strengthening cooperation is crucial for achieving sustainable development and security in local governments.

In his closing remarks, Governor Makinde expressed gratitude for the transformative investments made in security and infrastructure, stating that these efforts have created a safe and business-friendly environment in the state.

“Together, we can build a safer, more prosperous Oyo State,” he concluded.
