Graduants of Social Work of Lagos State University, Ojo – Lagos have been inducted and enrolled into the register of the Chartered Institute of Social Work Practitioners of Nigeria (C-ISOWN).

C-ISOWN is the Social Work Regulatory body in Nigeria whose management team was in the school earlier to administer oath of allegiance and admission into the body of practitioners.

The Chartered Institute of Social Work Practitioners of Nigeria (C-ISOWN) is the body responsible for the registration, control, licensing, and issuing of stamp and seal to social work Practitioners in Nigeria according to the Federal Government Establishment Act No. 25 of 2022.

In accordance with the law of the Federal Republic of Nigeria and in the exercise of same law, C-ISOWN inducts candidates who have sat and passed the professional examination components of their studies and are certified in knowledge, skills and character.

The Inductees satisfied the conditions of registration and licensing having completed and passed the Final Professional Examination (FIPE) of the Social Work Proficiency Certificate Examination (SWPCE), and were found qualified to practice the Social Work profession in Nigeria with all rights and privileges.

The LASU Vice Chancellor, Prof. Ibiyemi Olatunji-Bello, represented by the Dean, Faculty of Social Sciences – Prof. Femi Lawal thanked the Institute for championing the course of Social Work profession in Nigeria, noting that the long standing relationship with the Institute was bearing fruits as the first set of inductees were being inducted.

The Vice Chancellor affirmed that LASU is known for outstanding professionalism having turned out professionals in many fields, with Social Work coming on board.

He, however, promised that with this, the Social Work programme was set for a full fledge department, and in no distant time, the Department will admit the first set of social work undergraduate degree students.

The Head of Department of Sociology, Dr. Samuel Oluranti commended the Institute and the Inductees for scaling through the examination huddles having monitored his students closely during the professional examination process; seminar, and the final examinations that eventually qualify them to qualify for the induction.

He hinted that LASU is known to be a progressive institution because the front liners of the Chartered Institute of Social Work Practitioners of Nigeria were of the 1995 Set of their Graduate Social Work course, and can safely be said that the Institute was brewed from LASU to the Nation.

Induction lectures were apt as delivered by Dr. Ariyibi Nasir – a Consultant Public Health Physician and Director of LASU Medical Centre who also delivered a lecture on advocating for mental health and well-being in vulnerable populations.

Mrs. Aderonke Oyelakin, the Lagos State Coordinator of Child Protection Network (CPN), delivered a lecture on strengthening families and child protection systems.

Sw. (Dr) Atere Olawale, who is the Head of Membership and Professional Services of the Institute before the Oath taking and induction charged the Inductees to be guided by the ethics, values and principles of the social work profession as all reckless actions and inactions shall not go unpunished.

Atere reminded that social work is a disciplined profession and regulated by the law of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, informing that a copy of the Establishment Act is appropriately registered in the High and Supreme Courts of Nigeria.

The Legal Officer of the Institute, Bar. Blessing Nwadinike, however clarified legal issues with the inductees and led them in the taking of the Oath of professional practice and charge them to abide with constitution of the Institute and the constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria and consequently handed the inductees over to the Registrar of the Institute who graciously admitted them to the Institute and inducted as appropriate.

The Registrar – Dr. Kemi Ottun also warmly received the inctees and pronounced them inducted into the Register of the Institute according to provisions of the laws of the Federal Republic as enshrined in the Establishment Act No. 25 of 2022 with all rights and privileges.

The Social Work Proficiency Certificates and Membership Certificates with personal registration numbers were issued to all Inductees .

She informed them that they can now apply for practice licences and stamp and seal of practice, which ensures standards and traceable practice. Hence, inductees are eligible to bear the prifix Sw. before their names as it is the legal patented right of all those in the Register of the Institute.
