Scientific, technological innovations bedrock of societal devt – YabaTech Rector

Yaba College of Technology, YABATECH Rector, Dr. Engr. Ibraheem Abdul emphasised the pivotal role of innovation in Science and Technology as the bedrock of societal progress. Speaking at the 7th International Conference and Exhibitions organised by the School of Science, themed “Scientific And Technological Innovations: Catalysts For Sustainable Transformation And Developments”, Dr. Abdul highlighted the importance of collaborative efforts in addressing pressing global challenges.

He stated, “Innovation in Science and Technology has the power to redefine industries, enhance productivity, and improve the quality of our lives. Our role as scholars, researchers, and practitioners goes beyond innovation for innovation’s sake. We must ensure that our advancements contribute to sustainable development, addressing the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs.”

Dr. Engr. Abdul, represented by the Deputy Rector Academics, Dr. Engr. Ismail Badmus explained the transformative potential of scientists and technologists in pushing boundaries and exploring new horizons. He urged participants to engage actively, share insights, and connect with fellow innovators to inspire actions leading to substantial advancements in communities and beyond.

The lead speaker lecturer, Prof. Olusegun Ayejuyo, delved into the concept of innovation in science and technology, stating, “Innovation can be viewed as a deliberate intervention to try out new ideas in solving concrete or identified problems/challenges. Any new knowledge or theory from science will eventually influence a technological advancement, and vice versa.”

Furthermore, the keynote speaker, Dr. Sesan Olufolabo, reiterated the crucial role of statistics in achieving the Sustainable Development Goals, SDGs, and providing the data needed to measure progress and drive informed policy decisions. He highlighted the impact of the interaction between science and technology innovation, and industrial structure upgrading on sustainable and high-quality regional and state economics.

In his welcome address, the Dean of the School of Science, Dr. Abiodun Ashiru, stressed the significance of the conference in exploring the role of scientific and technological innovations in driving sustainable transformations and developments at this pivotal moment in human history. He challenged participants to find innovative solutions to global issues such as climate change, energy, resource management, and food security.
