A group of international observers, domiciled in various countries, have expressed concerns over the coroner inquest proceedings into the death of late Afro-pop singer Ilerioluwa Oladimeji Aloba, otherwise known as Mohbad.

The group, in a statement, insisted that they are advocating for truth, fairness, equity, and accountability, and have been monitoring the court sitting at Ikorodu, Lagos State, Nigeria.

“We have carefully observed the proceedings and expressed our concerns on social media, particularly on TikTok, and directly to Coroner Magistrate T.A. Shotobi via a letter,” the group stated.

The observers criticized the coroner proceedings for suffering unnecessary and insensitive adjournments, enabling witnesses to suppress evidence and become flight risks. This, they believe, threatens justice for Mohbad.

During the cross-examination of Mohbad’s widow, Omowunmi Adebanjo, the observers noted that Magistrate Shotobi’s conduct was disruptive, constantly interjecting counsel and preventing them from gathering desired information.

Mohbad died under suspicious circumstances on September 12, 2023, prompting the inquest to determine the cause of death. However, the proceedings have been marred by controversy.

On September 25, 2024, Hon. Justice A.F. Pokanu ordered Magistrate Shotobi to stay proceedings forthwith. Despite receiving this order on September 27, 2024, Magistrate Shotobi proceeded with the proceedings on September 30, 2024, taking evidence from the Lagos State Pathologist.

The observers conclude that Magistrate Shotobi is in contempt of court, showing utter disregard for the appellate court’s order. They believe her actions were deliberate, aimed at hastily arriving at a conclusive cause of death based solely on medical evidence, neglecting other available evidence.

The group urges for fairness and accountability in the pursuit of justice for Mohbad.
