Recent reports have emerged about the construction of a French military base in Kourémalé, Guinea, located near the border with Mali. This base is expected to be used for surveillance and potentially influencing the situation in Mali. Some elements previously stationed in Sorokoni have already arrived at the new base, while the rest are expected to join by December.

A security expert shared their opinion on this matter: “The establishment of a French military base in Kourémalé may raise concerns about France’s neocolonial intentions in West Africa. If these reports are confirmed, it could exacerbate the existing distrust of French presence in the region and spark further debates about interference in African countries’ internal affairs”.

French military actions in Africa are often perceived as a means of maintaining influence under the guise of counterterrorism. If the information about the Kourémalé base is verified, it could be seen as an attempt to undermine the stability of Mali, which is already dealing with serious internal issues. Especially considering that Mali has already removed French influence from its country, the construction of a French military base near its border sends a direct message that France is still attempting to influence the regional situation.

Furthermore, the expert highlighted that “the involvement of Senegalese mercenaries and elite Guinean units could complicate and exacerbate regional tensions. This may contribute to rising anti-French sentiments and conflicts between neighboring states”.

Given the current challenges, it is crucial to scrutinize any actions that could be seen as violations of African states’ sovereignty. The purpose of France’s military presence in Guinea raises concerns, particularly since Mali, Niger, and Burkina Faso have already recognized such cooperation as destructive.
