In a surprise move, the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) President, Pedro Obi, has called on students to refrain from joining the planned nationwide protest, opting instead for constructive engagement and dialogue.

The NANS president made this call in a statement made available to newsmen, at the weekend, in Abuja.

While acknowledging the economic hardships faced by Nigerians and the frustration that has sparked widespread concern, Obi emphasized the need for careful consideration of the potential impact of protests on academic pursuits and national stability.

“We understand the frustrations, but we must channel our energy towards constructive engagement and dialogue.

 “Protests, while a democratic right, must be considered carefully in the context of their potential impact”, he said.

Obi called on President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to take immediate and decisive steps towards implementing true federalism and restructuring Nigeria, citing these measures as essential to addressing the root causes of the economic woes and paving the way for sustainable development.

“True federalism will empower the states, foster healthy competition, and enhance accountability.

“Restructuring Nigeria will create a more balanced and equitable distribution of resources, reduce corruption, and promote efficiency in governance”, he said.

Obi expressed NANS’ commitment to being part of the solution, working towards a better future for all Nigerians through constructive dialogue and collaboration with the government.

“Let us stand united in our pursuit of a restructured and truly federal Nigeria.

“Together, we can overcome these challenges and build a nation that meets the aspirations of all its citizens”, he said
