WARRI – Concerned Niger Delta Group (CNDG) has cautioned the Federal Government against extending the October 4, 2009, deadline given militants in the region to disarm, warning that the government should not treat the un-repentant militants with kids glove any longer.

Similarly, all public schools designated as arms submission centres in the region are yet to resume for the new academic session owing to the menacing presence of military personnel and their sand bags makeshift huts in the various school premises.

The CNDG in a statement signed by its president, Comrade Tare Oweikeyi and two others,  said it was regrettable that the government has started pandering to capricious whims of the militants once again.

It noted:  “It was this kids glove treatment in handling these boys that snowballed into full blown belligerency and armed confrontations with trained military men to the chagrin of all right-thinking persons in the region that led to the killing of serving military officers and men.”

The group said there was no need extending the deadline, as it would appear that the militants were buying time and tactically preparing for another show down with the military and Federal Government.

It  insisted that the amnesty package was on course, adding that development was a process that should not be stampeded to satisfy just a segment for selfish reasons of criminality masquerading as struggle for the betterment of the Niger Delta.

The group warned that government was again playing into the hands of the militants with dire consequences.
