Association of Bureaux De Change Operators of Nigeria (ABCON) has said none of its bureau de change (BDC) member was robbed in the robbery incident at the car park of the international airport last week.

It was reported in the media last week that BDCs at the airport were robbed of $600,000 in a robbery incident that took place at the airport car park.

Responding to the incident while addressing journalists, ABCON President, Dr. Emmanuel Balogun, said  “While we express sympathy for those robbed during the incident, I’ll like to state categorically that no BDC member of ABCON was involved.

“ABCON BDC members by regulation operate only from their offices which are inspected by the ABCON and the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) before they are licensed.

“Secondly, and as a result of this, it is illegal for our members to operate from anywhere different from the approved offices and I can categorically tell you that ABCON BDC members at the international airport operate from their offices which are located within the building of the airport.

“When we read the report of the robbery incident, we made some enquiries, which confirm that none of the ABCON BDC members at the airport was involved.

“ABCON will like to use this as opportunity to remind the public to patronise only BDCs that operate in offices and whose operating licenses are conspicuously displayed in such offices.

“These are the BDCs under the supervision and monitoring of Association of Bureaux De Change Operators of Nigeria (ABCON) and the CBN, and that is where the security and genuineness of foreign exchange transactions are guaranteed.”
