A US-based Nigerian researcher, Segun Obisesan, has continued to bask in the euphoria of his academic excellence and awards that have seen him rise to prominence in the scientific community.

Obisesan’s remarkable journey began when he graduated top of his class with a first-class degree in Chemistry from Adekunle Ajasin University in 2017.

His exceptional academic journey has been marked by a series of prestigious awards and fellowships that have propelled him to new heights. One of the early milestones was being selected for the Opportunity Funds Programme, a United States Department of State Sponsored Program, in 2018. This opportunity laid a solid foundation for his subsequent achievements.

Currently pursuing a Ph.D. in Chemistry at Auburn University under the guidance of Research Advisor Christian R. Goldsmith, Obisesan’s thesis focuses on “Dioxygen reduction using first-row transition metal complexes with redox-active organic ligands,” a cutting-edge research area with significant implications.

Throughout his academic career, Obisesan has amassed numerous accolades that highlight his contributions to the field.

Among these are the Southwestern Black Students Leadership Conference Award from Texas A&M University in January 2024, recognizing outstanding leadership and academic achievements among black students, and the Advancing Science Conference Grant from the National Organization for the Professional Advancement of Black Chemists and Chemical Engineers (NOBCChE) in September 2023, which supports his participation in leading scientific conferences.

Additionally, he received the ACS – Bridge Project Career Conference Award from the American Chemical Society and the Genentech Foundation in September 2023, underscoring his potential as a future leader in chemistry.

His recognition as a CCB Chemistry Future Leader by Harvard University in August 2023 further cements his status as an innovative researcher and leader.

In May 2023, he was named a Corteva Agrisciences Chemistry Scholar, highlighting his exceptional research potential and contributions to the field of agricultural sciences. His leadership and service within the graduate student community were acknowledged with the Outstanding Graduate Student Senator Award from Auburn University in April 2023, alongside the Dow Fellowship from the Department of Chemistry at Auburn, supporting his cutting-edge research.

His journey of excellence began with his recognition as the Best Graduating Student in the Department of Chemical Sciences at Adekunle Ajasin University in November 2017 and as the gold medalist in the Professor A. O. Oshodi Intervarsity Debate Competition organized by the Chemical Society of Nigeria.

Segun Obisesan’s array of awards and fellowships not only attest to his academic brilliance but also to his leadership and dedication to the advancement of science.

As he continues his research at Auburn University, these honors serve as a testament to his journey of excellence and his promising future in the scientific community.
