Weather experts predict that this year’s rains will come with much intensity than what obtained in the previous years.
Against this backdrop, the Lagos State Government through its Ministry of the Environment has promised to ensure completion of all ongoing construction, dredging and maintenance of drainage projects scattered across the 57 local Government Councils in the state.
The Commissioner for the Environment, Mr. Tunji Bello who stated this during the inspection of ongoing school deflooding, dredging and beautification programmes at Coker/Aguda, Ijeshtedo, Apapa/Iganmu and other parts of Surulere areas of the state last week, added that the state government is set to alleviate the problem of flooding in Lagos ahead of the rains.
Mr Tunji Bello stated that over 100 schools have been deflooded, out of the identified 300 schools affected by flood in the state and promised to intensify efforts to ensure that the remaining schools get succor before the rainy season
The Commissioner explained that the minimal flooding experienced by Lagos residents last year was due to the holistic approach adopted by the state government to address the challenges of flooding in the state.
At the ongoing upgrading and improvement of System 5 drainage channel at Babs Animashaun to Sari Iganmu Bridge in Surulere, the Lagos State Government, he said, has commenced dredging and construction of Trapezoidal Concrete channel between the end of existing rectangular concrete channel at Babs Animashaun bridge.
The Commissioner expressed satisfaction at the level of success attained by the contractor handling the project, while he noted that the dredging and lining of the channel had provided great relief to the people of the area.
