EXPERTS in the technology sector have urged parents to empower their children with tech skills, saying it is one of the keys needed to survive in the 21st century.

They said because the world has become a global village, many organisations have acquired tech skills and proficiency at these skills a requirement.

Speaking in Lagos at an event organised by Indepth Computers, with the theme ‘The Biggest Future Innovators Tech Festival,’ the experts said schools must also be encouraged to infuse Information Communication Technology, ICT, into the educational curriculum.

In his remarks, the Lagos State Commissioner for Innovation, Science and Technology, Olatunbosun Alake, said it is imperative to empower young children, especially at the primary school stage, with the skills required to survive in the ever-changing world.

While pledging the state government’s commitment to ensuring Lagos remains the hub of tech and innovation, Alake said: “With the advent of technology and computers, education throughout the world is changing. In about 100 comprehensive schools, there have been additional topics in the curriculum.

“We now have graphics design being taught in secondary schools, as well as carpentry, plumbing and other practical skills that are required in the industry. These are things that the regular curriculum doesn’t cater to, but Lagos State has taken it upon itself to augment the curriculum.”

Founder of Indepth Computers, Nathaniel Adoyi, on his part, stressed that technology education is key to children’s upbringing, adding that the future has changed with improvements in technology.

Adayi said: “Our goal is to empower children to showcase their creativity and innovative ideas and engage in discussions that contribute to advancing their technological education.”

On his part, the Chief Financial Officer of Wema Bank, Tunde Mabawonku, tasked parents to keep encouraging their children to learn.
