Nigeria poised to become strategic partner for US in critical minerals sector

By Etop Ekanem

Nigeria is uniquely positioned to become a key partner for the United States in the critical minerals sector,  says Mr. Edikan Udofia, a leading expert in mining operations and energy infrastructure development.

In a recent statement, the expert stressed that this partnership would leverage Nigeria’s abundant mineral resources and established energy sector expertise to drive economic growth and energy security in both nations. He noted that the US drive for energy security and critical minerals independence aligns perfectly with Nigeria’s mineral development objectives.

Udofia asserted that by combining Nigeria’s resource potential with American technology and investment, both nations can benefit from a powerful alliance, adding: “Nigeria’s expertise in managing complex extraction projects can complement US strategic interests, accelerating the development of critical mineral supplies essential for clean energy technologies and advanced manufacturing.”

The expert disclosed that specific opportunities exist in steel production, with Nigeria’s iron ore deposits being strategically important to US industrial ambitions, noting: “The US push for reindustrialization requires secure steel supplies, and Nigeria’s vast iron ore deposits and potential for steel manufacturing represent a natural partnership opportunity.”

Udofia further emphasized the importance of sustainable mineral development and responsibly sourced materials, noting that by combining US environmental standards with Nigeria’s resource potential, both nations can create a model for sustainable critical minerals development.

“Emerging opportunities in battery minerals are particularly promising for bilateral cooperation, with Nigeria’s potential in this sector supporting American technology and investment to achieve energy transition goals. A strong US-Nigeria alliance in the critical minerals sector would contribute to global supply chain security while promoting economic development in both countries,” Udofia asserted.

The expert stated that as global competition for critical minerals intensifies, strategic partnerships between trusted nations become increasingly important, stressing that the US government should sharpen its focus on Africa, particularly Nigeria, and design a comprehensive critical minerals strategy that aims to build mutually beneficial partnerships with Africans.

“This partnership would not only benefit Nigeria and the US but also contribute to global economic growth and energy security. As the world transitions to a low-carbon economy, the demand for critical minerals is expected to increase, making this partnership a crucial step in meeting that demand,” he noted.
