ABUJA – Stakeholders have implored both the Federal and state governments of Nigeria to hasten the enactment of policies aimed at fostering gender equality and the empowerment of women.

The call was made in a communique issued after a two-day conference for commissioners from state ministries dedicated to women’s affairs.

The gathering was organized by the Rule of Law and Anti-Corruption Initiative (RoLAC), with backing from the European Union and International IDEA.

It focused on the theme: “Critical Issues and Opportunities for Enhancing Rights, Protection and Justice for Women, Children and Persons with Disabilities.”

The conference participants, who were privy to various national and international legal frameworks that advocate for gender equality and women’s empowerment, recognized the steps forward that have been made.

However, they also stressed the necessity for a comprehensive approach involving multiple institutions to transform Nigeria into a nation where peace prevails and violence is eradicated.

The stakeholders pointed out the current policy, legal, and institutional frameworks’ shortcomings in achieving the desired outcomes for Nigerian women, children, and those with disabilities.

“We call upon the Nigerian Government at all levels – Federal, State, and Local – to commit to expediting the implementation of policies, laws, and institutional frameworks related to Gender Equality and Women’s Empowerment,” the statement continued.

The communique further called for the implementation of the parity principle, which seeks equal representation for women in decision-making across all sectors, along with the eradication of all forms of violence against women and girls.

It emphasized the importance of ensuring the wellbeing of vulnerable and marginalized groups, including rural and urban-poor women, the elderly, and persons living with disabilities.

Moreover, participants urged the government to ensure that human rights are protected and social justice remains a priority, pressing for adequate funding in national and state budgets to address the needs of women, children, and persons with disabilities.
