In a bid to teach pupils how to write essays, Holy Child College, Ikoyi, Lagos, last weekend held her 10th Annual Funfair and Bazaar to mark the end of year 2011, where students are expected to record their fun-filled experiences through written essays.

The funfair usually held after every first term exams, is a re-union where day and boarder pupils, their parents and siblings, friends and well-wishers come together in the girls’ College to have fun.

According to the Administrator of the College, Rev. Sis. Ify Atuegbu, the annual event is usually held in the College so that the children can together have fun with their siblings and parents, especially for the boarders who have not seen their family and friends for sometime.

Atuegbu expressed: “I am actually excited like the children; although, this is my first experience of this event in the college, as I came here last September.

“We have given the parents a written notice inviting them for the programme, so we are expecting all or large number of them; the children of our teaching and non-teaching staff will also be here for the fair”.

She added that she expected the children to have fun in the funfair and bazaar, and thereafter they will be asked to write about their experiences, to build upon their writing skills and to enable the College improve on subsequent editions.

“Aside the fun, the event is also a means of raising funds to set in place infrastructure and other projects in the school, adding, “we have also invited other schools like Sacred Heart College, Methodist Boys High School, St. Gregory College, Kings College and others to come and have fun with us”.

Meanwhile, at the event different stands handled by teachers include: Ice-creams, hot-dogs, zobo drinks, foods, African salad (abacha), pop corn, chicken, barbeque (suya), clothes, jewelries and other accessories.

Others stands which enlivened the day for children are Teddy bear, snacks and water, merry-go-round, bouncing castle, horse-riding, a visit to Beauty Queen, with lot of gifts to her visitors and a raffle draw game named Tobola, where lucky players go home with prizes like kegs of vegetable oil, broken plates and cups, packs of parboiled rice, baby lotions, sachets of detergents and lots more.

Some students, parents and teachers who were at the event expressed satisfaction in this year’s edition, saying “it was interesting and fun-filled”.
