Africa needs long-term investment in education, research to unlock its potentials – Omotayo

One of Nigeria’s best brains in the field of Information and Communications Technology (ICT), Joseph Omotayo, has shared insights into success of his career, attributing it to meticulous planning, continuous learning, and relentlessly being curious.

Despite graduated as a mechanical engineer from the University of Ilorin, Kwara State, his journey into the digital space, particularly at the advent of telecommunications in Nigeria, showcased the impact of continuous learning and adaptability.

Speaking in an interactive session with newsmen about the trajectory of his career and how far he has come, Omotayo who has worked with companies such as IBM, Ericsson, Huawei, and Schneider Electric emphasized the role of creativity and collaboration in his professional journey.

According to him, his diverse roles, ranging from manager to solution architect, challenged him to deliver top-notch solutions while collaborating with exceptional professionals across Africa, the Middle East, and India.

Speaking about job transitions, Omotayo said he views them as strategic moves for career advancement, noting that he sees calculated risk as an essential ingredient in the competitive job market to fulfilled one’s career trajectory.

“The challenges presented in different roles allowed me to avoid complacency and contribute effectively to deploy solution and provide support in critical sectors across Africa and the Middle East.”

Omotayo shared insights into some of the major projects he undertook, including data center security projects across African countries, billing project in UAE, and modernization projects in Oman and Nigeria. His contributions to solution deployment and support reflect his commitment to effective service delivery.

Expressing concerns about Africa’s technological lag compared to the Western world, Omotayo stressed the need for visionary leadership, focused and strategic development. He emphasized the importance of deliberate, long-term investments in education, research, and development to unlock Africa’s potentials in all sectors with the evolving technology.

Addressing the role of governments, Omotayo pointed out that strong political will, clear leadership, and visionary governance are crucial for technological development. He urged African nations to set clear policy direction as business enablers in all sectors to attract both foreign and internal investments.

He highlighted the role of citizen engagement in driving political change. He proposed that citizens advocate for meaningful interaction with political leaders to secure alignment with expectations regarding effective governance, education, healthcare, and infrastructure development. Furthermore, he recommended a substantial overhaul of the civil service, establishing a robust institution focused on delivering the dividends of democracy.

Reflecting on his role as a Service Delivery Manager, Omotayo emphasized the responsibility of managing resources to deliver services. He shared memorable experiences from managing Airtel Nigeria’s network operations, improving network capacity, and ensuring consistent service availability for end-users. He also shed light on his contributions to the Bharti Airtel DC transformation across Africa and the Vodafone Oman turnkey project. His roles as a network service specialist and lead solution integrator in these projects contributed to their successes.

Discussing his involvement in the SMILE Nigeria 4G/LTE project (first in Nigeria), Omotayo highlighted his role as the IP subject matter expert in the managed service project. He contributed to network optimization, capacity improvement, and security enhancements across Nigeria.

Omotayo discussed his commitment to knowledge transfer, citing various platforms, training, and one-on-one engagements where he has shared his expertise. Looking ahead, he expressed his desire to deepen his knowledge in secure design architecture and contribute further to platforms and associations promoting continuous learning and positive impact in ICT and critical infrastructure.
