After winning the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) in its debut campaign in 1996, the Bafana Bafana’s subsequent nine campaigns have failed successfully to repeat the feat as South African football gallops for continental glory.

Ranked 12th on the continent, South Africa boast of a fairly decent side that can be a thorn in the flesh of the favourites for the AFCON crown.

With a tendency to exit the tournament in the quarter-finals, the Hugo Boss side will be all out to break that jinx and meet the huge expectations they carry on their shoulder for not only their country but the ‘best representative’ out of southern Africa.

Coach

Hugo Broos is one of the most experienced coaches going into the Africa Cup of Nations in Cote D’Ivoire.

The Belgian is famous for being the man on the bench when Cameroon claimed their fifth AFCON crown in 2019.

Teams squaring up against the Bafana Bafana should expect to face a highly tactical side under the expert tutelage of Broos.

Star Player

Sleek, skillful, pacy with a touch for unusual goals, Percy Tau is one of the players to watch out for in Cote D’Ivoire.

The Al-Ahly forward is a nightmare for defence, and South Africa will have their hopes high on the 29-year-old leading the Bafana Bafana to AFCON glory.

Rising Star

At 24 years, Sphephelo Sithole has established himself in the heart of the South African midfield with his industry and artistry at the middle of the park.

His qualities will be needed for the Bafana Bafana to boss out opponents in the midfield.
